UPDATE: FROM COOKIE'S NEW MOM 6/12/08: Cookie was retested for heartworm again today, and he tested NEGATIVE!!!!
I am so happy that he is finally a healthy boy! Big thanks to Dr. Rice for treating Cookie and giving him the best care to get
him through this!
UPDATE: FROM COOKIE'S NEW MOM 12/26/07: Well, we finally found out why Cookie Monster was blind in his left eye. Dr.
Rice had to remove it last week because it started to bleed on the inside of the globe of the eye. The pathologist found a
BB inside of it which caused the blindness. The BB starting to break down caused all of the irritation and bleeding. Poor
Cookie is now a one eyed boy, but he's still cute as can be. I think that once his scruffy fur grows back around the eye
that the missing eye won't be as noticeable because the fur will cover it. He's a very happy boy though and back to his
usual antics! He's become quite the klepto, as he likes to steal everything and anything that he can fit in his mouth. He
then hoards all of his "treasures" in his crate!!! His goofy personality grows and grows each and every day. He is a
pleasure to have as a "son" and I love him very much!
UPDATE: FROM COOKIE'S NEW MOM 10/22/07: Oh my Gosh! I have NEVER seen Cookie play. I'm sitting in my recliner
right now, and I heard this racket of scurrying feet. I look over in the kitchen and Cookie has taken his blanket out of his
crate and is dragging it across the floor shaking it back and forth. Then, he lays down next to it and starts rooting around
underneath it with his nose. A few moments later he proudly comes out with his prize - a cat toy! He's prancing around
the living room right now shaking it back and forth and being silly as can be! He's a hoot!!!
UPDATE: 10/13/07: Cookie has stolen the heart of Barbara, the director of Ditty Dats & Dogs Rescue and he has been
adopted by her. He will have a loving permanent home with her and be best buds with her other pooch, Mufasah. He
made himself at home here on his first day, and I think he's been pretty persistent at convincing her that he was
permanently home ever since!
UPDATE: 9/23/07: Thursday evening after I took Cookie for a walk, he started coughing up blood again. This time though,
it was a lot more blood than the last time that he was hospitalized. He had a 20 minute bout of coughing and it was a very
scary and intense time. I called the vet immediately, and Dr. Bollenbeck told me to bring him in right away. Driving to the
vets office I was crying because I was so worried about him. I haven't ever seen a dog cough up so much blood. Sweet
Cookie realized that I was crying and crawled into my lap at a red light to lick the tears from my cheeks and to comfort
me! Here I am worried sick about him, and he's now worried about me. We make quite the pair! He's such a sweet boy
and so loving. They did another x-ray on him, and also some blood work. Upon comparing all 3 sets of x-rays that have
been taken throughout Cookie's treatment it is obvious that his lungs look worse now. His right lung has significant
changes in it. The vet put him on a stronger dose of steroids, gave him some more antibiotics and also is continuing with
the daily baby aspirin. Cookie is on strict crate rest for 2-3 weeks. He is only allowed to come out to go potty, then he has
to be put right back in. He needs to be kept very quiet and calm while his body continues to process the dead heart
worms. He could be the poster dog for heart worm disease, as he is showing all of the classic problems associated with
treating heart worm. Cookie Monster continues to be his normal sweet and loving self. He gets so happy when I go to his
crate to sit with him and give him some loving. I hate keeping him in there all of the time, but I know that it's for the best.
UPDATE: 9/4/07: I would venture to say that Cookie is feeling pretty darn good right now... I woke up this morning to find
him curled up beside me in bed with his head resting on my pillow!!!! He's learned that pig ears are FABULOUS! And he
likes to lay next to my feet when I'm relaxing in my recliner. And when he's feeling spunky, he'll roll over on his back and
wiggle around with his tongue lolling out and look at me upside down! LOL. He's a cute little imp and a funny guy! I see
only good things for Cookie's future now. He's come a long way from the scared little pup at the doggie jail where he
cowered in the back of his kennel and his whole body would shake from fear. If you'd like to donate to help pay for
Cookie's vet bills, please see below. We still have $518.33 left to raise to cover all of his vet expenses.
UPDATE: 8/30/07: I picked up Cookie Monster from the vet today. Yay!!! He's not coughing anymore, and no more of
those sad little grunts from being in pain. I couldn't be happier! He's relaxing now. The vet staff just loves him!
They agree that he will be adopted very quickly after getting better from his H/W treatment. By the way, Cookie is now
crate trained and about 80% house trained!!! He's such a smart little boy. If you'd like to donate to pay Cookie's
vet bills please see below. He is racking up quite the bill - but he's worth every penny.
UPDATE: 8/27/07: Poor little Cookie Monster is not feeling very well. Late Sunday night he started coughing and spitting
up some blood. I took him to the vet first thing this morning. Dr. Rice took some x-rays and ran some blood work on him.
He advised that there is a small area on the back right lung that is bleeding from the heart worms dying and breaking
loose. Cookie is also running a fever and is still very tender in his lumbar area on his back. The tenderness in his back is
from the injections, and it causes him make small grunting noises when moving because it's very uncomfortable. Dr. Rice
recommended keeping Cookie at the hospital for one to two days for observation to make sure that he's okay. He's on
pain meds and antibiotics to reduce his fever. Heart worms dying off can reek havoc on a dogs body, and poor Cookie is
taking the brunt of it. We are praying that he feels better soon. He's such a darling boy - still wagging his tail and giving
sweet kisses.
UPDATE: 8/23/07: We have raised $370 for Cookie's heart worm treatment! Cookie had his injections yesterday. He
came home last night. This morning he seemed very painful and didn't want to move very much. I took him back to
see Dr. Rice to make sure that everything was okay. Cookie is favoring his back two legs and Dr. Rice thinks that it is
irritation to his nerves from the
injections, as the injections were given in his back. Cookie is now on two different types of pain medications to help him
through the next five days or so.
UPDATE: 8/21/07: Last night when I went to put Cookie Monster in his crate for bed time, he quickly gave me a kiss, then
had a very worried expression on his face, like he wasn't sure if I would be happy with him. I quickly gave him lots of love
and praise, and of course, a kiss on his forehead! This morning when I took him out of his crate, he gave me a big ole
sloppy kiss and I swear that he was grinning! His tail was wagging feverishly and his whole body was wiggling! I think
he's very proud of himself for giving sweet kisses now!!! By the way, I dropped off Cookie Monster and Mixer at the vets
office this morning for their heart worm injections. I will let you all know how they do once Dr. Rice calls me today with an
update!
UPDATE: 8/20/07: We have raised $250 so far for Cookie's treatment! Cookie Monster is going to the vet tomorrow
morning for his H/W injections. He will receive his first injection in the morning, spend the night at the vets office, then
receive his second injection the next morning. I will be able to take him back home the evening of 8/22. I will miss the
sweet boy while he's gone - I am very smitten him!
UPDATE: 8/14/07: We have raised $250 so far for Cookie's treatment! Cookie went to the vet today. Dr. Rice took X-Rays
of his chest and ran some blood tests. The X-Rays show classic changes in the veins going to his lungs due to heart
worm infestation. The blood tests won't get back until tomorrow. Once the blood work is back, Dr. Rice will determine a
treatment plan for Cookie.
Also, there a heartbreaking discovery made yesterday. It is possible that our little "Cookie Monster" may have cancer.
His left eye was real blinky. When Dr. Rice looked at it under the scope, he determined that Cookie is blind in his left eye.
There is also scar tissue built up in the eye. This scar tissue could be a melanoma (cancer). Or, it could be from a
previous trauma which caused the blindness and scarring. Dr. Rice wants to see Cookie back in about 6 weeks to look at
the eye again. If there are more changes to the eye, then it's cancer. If the eye looks the same, then it's from a previous
trauma. We are so hopeful that it isn't cancer.
UPDATE: 8/12/07: Cookie arrived yesterday with his pal, Mixer! He is the most adorable little fellow that you could ever
meet. He has the cutest black button nose! Cookie was given a bath today and did fabulous. He also walks like a
complete gentleman on the leash too! He is such a sweet boy. I'm looking forward to what the vet has to say about his
H/W treatment. This little guy is going to make someone a wonderful pet and companion.
UPDATE: 8/6/07: We have raised $200 for Cookie's treatment so far! We need to raise another $250 to reach our goal to
cover his entire treatment. Also, Cookie is arriving on the 11th with a friend!!! He's coming here with Mixer, a female
Cavalier King Charles/Cocker Spaniel mix. Mixer is also H/W positive, but she has full sponsorship by a very kind woman
living in SC named Mary. Both Mixer and Cookie will be available for adoption once they have been treated for Heart
Worm. Thanks again to all the great people who have donated for Cookie's treatment!
UPDATE: 8/1/07: Cookie will be arriving here on August 11th! His first appointment with the Dr. Len Rice from Towne
Animal Clinic is scheduled for August 14th to evaluate how bad the HW infestation is to determine the course of
treatment. We'll keep you posted on what Dr. Rice has to say.
UPDATE: 7/31/07: We are well on our way to raising enough money for Cookie's H/W treatment! So far 3 very generous
people have donated to help Cookie. We haven't reached our goal yet, so if you are thinking about donating - please do!
Also, we are making arrangements now for Cookie to be transported to us on August 11th.
UPDATE: 7/30/07: We received an estimate from our regular vet today for Cookie's treatment. It is expected to be
between $450-550. Now all we have to do is raise the money to save this boy! He is patiently waiting for us to raise the
money to be able to pull him from the scary animal shelter.
7/29/07: Cookie is an adult Giant Schnauzer Mix who is currently at the Darlington County Humane Society in Darlington,
SC. Ditty Dats & Dogs Rescue is trying desperately to save his life. Cookie was tested for Heart Worm this morning, and
unfortunately, he tested positive. The cost to treat HW is anywhere between $500 to $1,000 depending on how severe the
HW infestation is. Right now Ditty Dats & Dogs Rescue is making a plea to the public requesting donations to go towards
the cost of having Cookie treated.
Please, even if you can only afford $1 or $5, every dollar counts! And it's one more dollar that we didn't have!

VIDEO -- YEAR IN REVIEW... COOKIE'S JOURNEY "HOME"
|
UPDATE: 9/17/08 @ 8:30PM: Cookie has his full appetite back and is completely
back to his ole silly adorable self! He hasn't had anymore seizures! YAY!!!
UPDATE: 9/15/08 @ 2:30PM: Cookie went to see Dr. Rice today. Another blood
test was done. That came back in normal ranges. He sent Cookie home w/
anti-seizure meds to take only in the event that he has another episode. Cookie
seems a little more like himself today.
UPDATE: 9/14/08 @ 10:30AM: Cookie had another seizure this morning. I woke
to the sound of him crashing to the floor again. I took him to the emergency vet
once more. The vet advised that he didn't think Cookie needed to be put on
anti-seizure meds yet. He recommended taking him home and having him seen
by his regular vet on Monday. So Cookie Monster is back home. He still doesn't
seem quite like himself yet.
UPDATE: 9/11/08 @ 4:45PM: I just spoke with the vet. Thankfully all of his
bloodwork and x-rays have come back normal and clear. He hasn't had
anymore episodes. He's hanging out with the clinic staff so they can monitor
him. She said that he's clear and alert and doing very good. She will call me
tomorrow morning to let me know how he's doing. If he doesn't have anymore
seizures, then I can go pick him up and bring him home. If he has more
seizures then the recommended course of action is to do an MRI of his brain to
see if there is a brain tumor. Keeping fingers crossed at this time. I miss my
baby. The house is very empty without him here. :-(
UPDATE: 9/11/08 @ 1:00PM: I need some prayers and happy thoughts for my
sweet Cookie Monster.... I woke up to the sound of a loud crash this morning. I
jumped out of bed to find Cookie collapsed. He had a grand mall seizure and
when he fell over his body crashed into the night stand. I found him on the floor
with his head at an odd angle smashed up against the night stand and his legs
were rigid. I pulled him to the middle of the room and immediately he began
with the convulsions. Frothing at the mouth, unresponsive, gasping for breath. I
looked at his eye and it was fully dialated and fixed. It lasted about 3 minutes
and I was panicked because if they go on for 4-5 minutes or longer they
overheat and can literally fry their brain causing death or permanent brain
damage. The convulsions stopped. His tongue was hanging out of his mouth
just limp - he had no control over it. It was also apparent that he was blind in his
one eye. Then his sight came back and he was completely disoriented. He
didn't know where he was, didn't know his name, had no clue who I was. He
staggered around the bedroom. I tried to comfort him but it only made him
more confused because he didn't know who I was. He was basically in a
disoriented panic pacing and whimpering. I got him out to the car and he just
paced in the back. I have a hatchback with the seats laid down so the dogs
have plenty of room back there. And the whole time we drove to the vet clinic
he whimpered and cried. I couldn't console him. The emergency vet is about 45
minutes from my house. About 30 minutes into the drive he finally seemed to
know where he was and who I was. He stuck his head between the seats and
gave me a kiss. But he continued to cry. We got to the clinic and he was
panicking, pacing in the parking lot, tail tucked between his legs. Totally
abnormal behavior for him. They are running bloodwork and doing an x-ray on
him today. He's staying there for 24 hour observation and the vet has been
given authorization to administer the seizure meds to help him if he does seize
again. When I left he had stopped crying and had his tail wagging. He seemed
more like himself. I gave him lots of Mommy hugs and kisses. I've pretty much
been in tears since 8am this morning when he woke me up. I'm waiting for the
vet to call me with an update on his test results.... It's an awful day.
UPDATE: 08/11/2008 : Cookie arrived here one year ago today! This precious boy had a long journey to get "home", but
he couldn't be more loved now!!! :-) A video has been created as a tribute to that journey home. It is posted above. I
hope that you all enjoy it!
